NICU Handwashing
In the NICU, be prepared to wash your hands…many times. Germs pose a great threat to infants in the NICU, since their immune systems are very weak. Handwashing is the number one way of preventing the spread of germs that can cause illness.
There are two methods of hand washing you can expect to perform in the NICU:
Hand Washing and Scrubbing
Use of a very special antiseptic soap applied with a scrub brush or out of a dispenser. A good thorough hand washing in the NICU will be from elbows to fingertips, including under the nails. A solid two to three minutes can be expected to thoroughly wash your hands.
Hand Sanitizers and Hand Sanitizers
Many NICUs are switching to a hand or foam sanitizer, as it kills 99.9% of germs, even MRSA. You should use foam sanitizer every time before touching your baby. It is the safest way to prevent the spread of germs. It is also a good idea to use a hand sanitizer before leaving the NICU as well.
