Neonatal Intensive Care Unit visitation is a very important aspect of the parent and family experience in the NICU. While parents are generally granted unlimited visitation privileges, many Neonatal ICUs will often restrict visitation by any others.
While this can lead to frustration on the part of parents at times, it is in the best interest of the babies. The general concept is to limit the exposure to the infants. Remember, visitors are not only exposing the infant they are seeing, but they are exposing NICU staff, as well as other parents and babies as well.
The more controlled NICU visitation is, the likelier it will be for the NICU to help control illness and infection.
